The Story Behind Heron-Poma Ski Lifts

Ski Lift Designs' Heron-Poma double chairlifts carry a story as old as the ski industry itself. Designed and built in Colorado from the beginning, Heron ski chairs, and later Heron-Poma have a pedigree known by resorts and skiers across the west.  Names like Crested Butte, Aspen, and Steamboat all got their start operating with a Heron-Poma lift.

Founder Bob Heron designed portable trams in WWII for the 10th Mountain Division, which were used in such battles as Riva Ridge. Heron's chairs were tested during the war at Colorado’s Camp Hale and after returning from his service, he used the chairs to build Aspen's #2 lift. His creativity and life-long career built what we know today as the ski lift.

These Heron-Poma double chairlifts are a living piece of that story, and a connection to the slopes of our childhoods. Ski Lift Designs' chairs bring the familiar joy of skiing and the camaraderie found on those chair lift rides back to you. Whether a long-awaited ride with your high school crush, or a first chair talk with your dad, the double chair creates a one of a kind intimacy whose moments seem to be captured at the comfortable pace of the double chairlift ride.

Ski Lift Designs is a passionate ode to what skiing use to be, and at its best still is. Come see how we keep these chairs alive.
